OIC supports alternative proposal for Gaza reconstruction
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has formally adopted an alternative Arab League proposal against US President Donald Trump’s plan to occupy Gaza and displace its residents. The proposal was adopted after an emergency meeting of the OIC in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday. At the time, the OIC called on the international community to support the regional initiative.
An Arab League summit in Cairo, Egypt, approved Egypt’s proposal for the reconstruction of Gaza on Tuesday. Three days later, the 57-member OIC meeting in Jeddah formally adopted the proposal.
The Egyptian proposal, an alternative to Trump’s proposal, widely condemned the future administration of Gaza’s reconstruction from the Palestinian Authority.
The OIC statement said that the OIC adopted a plan for the rapid recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. The organization, which represents the Muslim world, called on the international community and international and regional funding agencies to provide the necessary support for the plan as soon as possible.
The Trump administration wants to establish control over post-war Gaza. Trump also has a plan to forcibly evacuate Gaza. Trump’s proposal called for the evacuation of Gazans to Jordan and Egypt.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdellatti welcomed the OIC’s approval. He said he now hopes to gain support from the wider international community, including the United States. He added that the next step is to turn it into an international plan with support from the European Union, Japan, Russia, China and other international parties. He added that contacts are being made with the United States and other parties to this end.
Rabah Saif Allam of Cairo’s Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies said Trump’s plan has united Arab countries in opposition. Egypt is seeking wider support for its proposal. Rabah added that it is an attempt to build a broad coalition that rejects the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.
